2014 NTMA Safety Award Winner  May 18, 2015

We are proud to announce that Major Tool & Machine is a recipient of the NTMA (National Tooling & Machining Association) 2014 Safety Award. Safety is our number one priority at Major Tool, and we are proud to stand alongside the national chapters and organizations honored with this achievement.

The NTMA’s Annual Safety Award Survey is based upon the OSHA Form 300A, which Federal Law requires companies with more than ten employees complete and post visibly in their plant February 1 through April 30 of the year following the year covered by the form.

The purpose of the survey is to present the top-performing companies with an NTMA Safety Award Certificate that can be proudly displayed in their company, as well as provide NTMA the composite data that will allow them represent the member with OSHA and other regulatory agencies. A company’s eligibility to receive this award is determined by a calculation using the number of injuries versus the total number of man-hours worked in that calendar year. Those eligible to receive this award are among the best in the industry and something the owner and employees should be proud of.

20 Years of Quality Management  December 9, 2014

Indianapolis, Indiana – December 9, 2014

20 Years of Quality Management

ISO 9001 establishes a set of criteria for an effective quality management system. It can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of activity. In fact ISO 9001 has been implemented by over one million companies and organizations in over 170 countries.

This standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and involvement of top management, and the use of a process approach for developing, implementing and improving the effectiveness of a quality management system. Using ISO 9001 helps ensure that customers consistently receive good quality products and services that meet or exceed customer expectations.

As of December 9, 2014, Major Tool & Machine has been ISO 9001 certified for 20 years. We are extremely proud of this accreditation and the impact it has had on our organization. This certification gives us credibility throughout the manufacturing community by demonstrating operational excellence to our customers. The quality management system developed under ISO 9001 twenty years ago established the foundation we have used to obtain other accreditations such as AS9100, Nadcap (NDT / Welding) and ASME (Nuclear and non-Nuclear).

We would like to thank Bureau Veritas and the employees of Major Tool & Machine for our successes and achievements with regard to this certification.

Continuous Improvement at MTM  November 19, 2014

Indianapolis, Indiana – November 19, 2014

It’s all about accountability: In the world of customer service, actions speak louder than words.

For years we have used our ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software to drive business decisions and generate our comprehensive manufacturing schedule. In our high mix, low volume shop environment, maintaining reliable schedules is essential to our success.

As we looked for ways to improve this process, we implemented some tried and true “Visual Factory” techniques to make our schedules even more visible throughout the entire organization. We recently installed 43″ television monitors at every machine tool and fabrication resource in the shop. This gives everyone, from general managers to visiting customers, the ability to physically see and track operations on the critical path throughout the entire manufacturing process.

As illustrated in the pictures, only internal work order and work center operations numbers are displayed. This assures customer confidentiality is maintained at all times. This enhanced “Visual Factory” implementation is one of many examples of the investment in our facilities and the continuous improvement we strive for every day.

Habitat for Humanity 2014!  August 25, 2014

Indianapolis, Indiana – August 25, 2014

Habitat for Humanity 2014!

Major Tool & Machine is proud to support Habitat for Humanity in 2014!

For each of the last several years, Major Tool & Machine has participated in the Habitat for Humanity build, helping to build a new house for a deserving local family. This year we had a cross-functional team consisting of fifteen Major Tool employees participate in the community event.

After a brief safety meeting and overview of the day’s tasks, the team split into groups. What happened next seemed like a well-choreographed display of craftsmanship, communication and spirit of teaming that so many of us at Major Tool & Machine have grown accustomed to over the years.

As many of us would have expected, the workload planned for the day finished by 10:30 am and the Habitat volunteer was frantically searching for things to keep us busy! He had commented that he’d never seen this particular scope of work completed so quickly and with a superb level of quality go along with it. He also mentioned that he really wasn’t surprised because our team has had a great reputation from past Habitat volunteer efforts. Sometimes it takes stepping outside our walls and sharing our time and talents with others to help remind each of us just how incredibly special our employees are.

Thanks for your hard work and dedication!

Cobra Judy Replacement  May 27, 2014

    Indianapolis, Indiana – May 27, 2014

Major Tool & Machine is proud to partner with Raytheon for the successful completion of the critical CJR Program.

In July 2005, Major Tool and Machine began work as a subcontractor to Raytheon to fabricate the X-Band Radar Array structure for the Cobra Judy Replacement Program. MTM was responsible for all machining, fabricating, assembly, and mechanical testing of the Radar Array Structure.

This program was successfully completed in early 2007 and shipped to Raytheon for electronics subsystem integration. The Cobra Judy Replacement Program is another example of Major Tool & Machine’s ability to successfully manufacture and deliver mission critical hardware for United States Defense programs. We are extremely proud to work with Raytheon on such an important project.

A recent article dated May 1, 2014 from the Department of the Navy was published regarding the program completion:

From Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems public affairs:.

WASHINGTON (NNS) – The Cobra Judy Replacement program successfully achieved initial operational capability, March 31, providing the United States high-quality, dual-band radar data in support of ballistic missile treaty verification worldwide.

The U.S. Air Force now assumes operations and sustainment responsibilities for the vessel.

“We’re very excited to achieve initial operational capability,” said Capt. Roderick Wester, Cobra Judy Replacement major program manager, Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO, IWS). “This critical milestone is a testament to years of dedicated work from the government-industry team. Cobra Judy Replacement, with its advanced radar suite, will provide enhanced operational capabilities for decades.”

The program includes USNS Howard O. Lorenzen (T-AMG 25) and its mission equipment, which consists of integrated S- and X-band active electronically scanned radar antennas. Built by VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the ship will replace the USNS Observation Island (T-AGM 23).

PEO IWS, and affiliated program executive office of the Naval Sea Systems Command, manages surface ship and submarine combat technologies and systems and coordinates Navy enterprise solutions across ship platforms.
